12 Hour Adventure

The call came in at 12:17 AM Saturday night/Sunday Morning. The alarm center calling to notify me that the Fire Alarm at the Yelm WA meetinghouse was showing low air pressure on the Fire Sprinkler system. Its hard to think clearly only an hour or so into your nights sleep, but I felt I had better make the 1 hour drive to see what the matter was. When air pressure falls on a dry sprinkler system, water will flood the pipes and cause alot of work draining it all down, if there are any leaks or broken heads there can be flooding. I arrived at the building and found that the system had not yet tripped and I isolated the water system by shutting the main water supply valve so it would not flood.

As I inspected the building I realized the power was off here and there throughout the building. The breakers and panels were all in good shape and power was on. The only other condition causing the problem would have to be that one of the hot legs of the three phase power had failed. I called Puget Sound Energy around 1 AM and they sent a crew out about 2:30AM. The crew used some pretty technical equipment to find the break, it was under the pavement in the parking lot. Locates for Phone, Water, Gas and Electric came out through the night and by 7:30 AM they had marked all the utilities. About 8AM the Potelco crew showed up, I met the foreman Curt, lineman Tim and then Cale Burbidge my nephew jumped out of the truck, what a coincidence. These guys really knew what they were doing, I was really proud of Cale to see how they all worked as a team troubleshooting where and how to dig and how to repair the damage. The wire had literally blown out, After alot of hard work and good thinking they had the line spliced and the power back on at Noon Sunday. I worked as a liason between the crew and the local leaders, keeping everyone informed of progress and encouraging them not to cancel church because I knew we could have things up and running soon.

I really felt the Lord prompt me that I needed to be out there, it did turn out to be a serious problem and it was minimized because of the capable utilities crew and because of isolating the sprinkler system until power was restored.

The interesting thing for me was watching a busy building like that with 3 wards of latter-day saints in it. 9AM, 11AM,1PM were the start times of the 3 blocks, the ebb and flow of minivans, families and children, seeing people in their Sunday best, happy, coming to worship. It strengthened my testimony as I thought that the same scenario was playing out in chapels across the world, Millions attending, learning about and worshipping Jesus Christ. I love my job and am glad I can be of service in this great work.
